Brett “Fat Jockey” Phillpott

Ever since I can remember I’ve had racing in my blood, and I love horses with a passion. I attended the British Racing School at Newmarket, at the age of sixteen, with the ambition of becoming a jockey. In 1996, after completing the intensive 9-week course, I was posted to Simon Dow at Epsom - The Home of the Derby.

Unfortunately, I was a fast growing teenager and my 8st was increasing by the day. I did manage to keep it down long enough to have 20 rides on the flat as an amateur, but after putting up overweight a couple of times, I knew deep down my hopes of being a professional jockey were fading. I wanted to keep the dream alive, and rode out whenever I could but, it was then that a career in the City beckoned.

Fast forward to 2020 and I am now lucky enough to be a successful racehorse owner and manager of Fat Jockey Racing. We began with a group of friends and colleagues, who were interested in ownership, but found the costs of sole ownership prohibitive. So we grouped together and prepared to start our journey. I remembered what a hardworking and honest trainer Simon is, and as the Yearling Sales were approaching, I called him to help us purchase our first horse that we would own 100% of.

I had realised my dream - and I want you to realise yours too!

As a lifelong horseracing enthusiast, who has traveled and experienced the wonders of our sport far and wide, I will always believe that here, in the UK & Ireland, we have access to the best and most enjoyable horseracing on the planet. I am delighted to be ‘on board’ with Fat Jockey Racing to assist with your journey into racehorse ownership. I welcome, and look forward to meeting, our new syndicate members as we continue to grow together.

I’ve been a huge horseracing fan since I was old enough to draw a circle around a couple of selections on Grand National day. In fact, there’s not many sports that I’m not in to, but racing is one of the obsessions.

After finally retiring from 23 years of playing semi-professional football, I got involved with FJR, which satisfies the competitive edge without being as taxing on the hamstrings.

By day I’m a business development manager in the City and hope to bring the same traits from work to FJR. Organisation, eye for detail, making sure all is ship shape whilst being a bit of a perfectionist. I’ll be the one rushing round on race day with the itinerary, handing out passes and ensuring there are no empty glasses.

We have a great little community and I’m looking forward to meeting and helping out our new members. Welcome!

After listening to the Derby on my tiny radio at school and the great victories of The Minstrel, Shirley Heights and Troy in the 70's plus falling in love with racing after a 1982 Boxing Day visit to Kempton it has always been a dream to own a racehorse. My grandfather was a bookies "runner" in Liverpool in 1930's and 40's so it I guess it is in my DNA!

I have worked for nearly 40 years in the City building a wonderful rapport with clients from all over the globe who understand the importance of integrity and attention to detail.

The opportunity to be part of the FJR, particularly when "fun" is something that we all need back in our lives in 2020, has come at the perfect time. Likeminded people enjoying the sport of Kings & Queens but at a fraction of the cost. Come and join us at FJR and you just never know we may be leading in our own Derby winner one day!
